The Hummer is coming back and will be in showrooms next year, but you can order yours starting this Fall. The new Hummer will not be a running on fossil fuels but rather electricity. Yes, the new Hummer will be an all-electric vehicle. The Hummer EV will be as 2022 model, have 1,000-hp and 11,500 lb-ft of torque, do 0-60 in about 3 seconds. It will be a Hummer sport truck. We are talking about a Hummer EV Sport Utility Truck.

GM is going big on electrification and the GMC Hummer EV is about as big as it gets. With an equal commitment to quality and performance the 2022 Hummer EV is something special. What makes this all possible is a driveline and power system called Ultium. The All-New 2022 Hummer has an Ultium Propulsion System and joins the GMC Professional Grade lineup. This speaks to how the Hummer EV will share construction principles with other GMC vehicles and not be a stand-alone odd ball. Again, proof that GM is in this for the long haul.
The Ultium Propulsion System is the product of the GM Propulsion Systems Research Lab. The 2022 Hummer EV started with a clean sheet of paper as far as the drive unit and the battery. The Ultium name covers the battery, the electric systems, and the motors. Designing the whole thing together makes the system more flexible.

It all comes down to coming up with a great battery cell and turning that cell into part of a great battery with a great propulsion system. The battery chemistry is Nickel Cobalt Manganese Aluminum. The net result is 70 percent less cobalt. GM’s ability to stack more, or less cell modules into the battery pack is at least one factor in making propulsion, at this level, possible. Stacking modules horizontally or vertically, depending on the type of vehicle, also contribute to efficient design. That is an oversimplification, but we are trying to keep the “wonk factor” under control.

The floor of the vehicle houses the battery pack which is an integral part of the Hummer’s structure. A structure designed by the Hummer structural team not the electronics team. Which is the best way to assure the battery cells are protected in a crash and it makes the vehicle stiffer.

The net result is a 2022 Hummer EV that you can drive for 300 miles before charging and perhaps as much 400 miles between charges. It is a new day as far a driving is concerned. You can be a part of the historic first run this fall.
